Cervix (SER-vicks) - an opening between the vagina
and the uterus that helps to protect the inside of the uterus.
Clitoris (CLIT-or-iss) - the female sexual organ
that is located
at the top of the vulva.
Endorphins (en-DOR-fins) - chemicals made by the
brain that give you
a sense of well-being.
Fallopian Tubes (fah-LOW-pee-un) - the fallopian
tubes look like two long arms with
fingers at the end. Their purpose is to guide the egg to the uterus.
Growth Spurt - rapid changes to the body that are
experienced during puberty, such as an increase in height and the
development of breasts and hips.
Hormone (HOR-moan) - a chemical substance that regulates
the activity of certain body functions and organs.
Hymen (HIGH-men) - the protective strip of skin or
membrane which stretches at least partly across the vaginal opening
and has a hole or sometimes several holes in it.
Menstruation (men-stroo-AY-shun) - (menses) a period of about
3 to 7 days when a woman's uterus sheds its lining.
Ovaries (OH-vereez) - these are the two round-shaped
organs on either side of your pelvis. The ovaries contain eggs, sometimes
called ova or ovum (when there's only one egg). When an egg is joined
by a male sperm it becomes fertilized and grows into a baby.
PMS - Premenstrual syndrome; symptoms that women
get before the onset of their periods.
Puberty (PYOU-ber-tee) - the time when you mature reproductively
and go through many physical, emotional, hormonal and sexual changes.
Reproductive Organs - in a female they consist of
the ovaries and the uterus.
Uterus (YOU-ter-us) - this is the triangle shaped
organ, also called the womb, and it's where a fertilized egg grows
into a baby, or when the egg is not fertilized, its lining sheds to
give you your period.
Vagina (Vuh-JEYE-nuh) - this is the passageway into
and out of the female reproductive organs.
Vulva (VUL-vuh) - the name for the external parts
of the female genital organs.
